I wrote about Universal Apps for my Computer Science dissertation back in 2016. One codebase running that could create iOS, Android and Web Apps.

Last year I had a conversation with a CTO of a tier-1 startup in London and told him that I was optimistic about the progress on universal apps.

He replied "that's a pipe dream".

The dream is happening.

I first encountered react-native-web when Nicholas Gallagher (remember Normalize.css?!) dropped it.

Few used RNW for sometime as Expo played with it back and forth, Twitter Lite used it for Web while Nicholas was at Twitter, and then Nicholas went off to Meta.

That was exciting. Maybe RNW would fold into the core React Native project.

Meta has announced Nicholas' new project as React Strict Mode which is the implementation based on the RFC idea from last year.

A glimpse of the future of developing UI.
